about the omega psi phi fraternity, inc.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on November 17, 1911 at Howard University. The formation of the organization marked the first black fraternity to originate on a Black College campus. Foresight for the development of one of the nation’s most noted fraternities precipitated from the precise planning, diligent work, and high aspirations of four founding fathers-Bishop Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper, MD., Frank Coleman, Ph.D., and Earnest E. Just, Ph.D. These men felt the need for a more unified and structured organization that would express the ideals of true brotherhood and utmost friendship. The founding fathers therefore selected the phrase, “Friendship Is Essential To The Soul,” symbolized by the Greek letters, Omega Psi Phi, as the fraternity’s motto. Showing their spiritual insight and guiding force, the founding fathers chose Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift, as the fraternity’s four cardinal principles. From these basic concepts, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded.

Throughout the fraternity’s history, the beliefs of these four men have stimulated the growth of the organization. Currently, there are over 700 chapters comprising some 105,000 men who have crossed the “burning sands”, having being initiated into the brotherhood. The fraternity members are involved in various activities on the local and national levels that aid and meet the needs of all people. By turning their dreams into realities and fortifying them with the cardinal principles, the founders of Omega Psi Phi, Just, Coleman, Cooper, and Love bolstered the impetus to produce active participants, working to make our society move closer toward the goal of true friendship.
