The Fight Worth Fighting
Greetings, Brothers of Psi Lambda Lambda, our extended Omega family, and every visitor who has taken a moment to visit our website.
As we enter July, we find ourselves surrounded by celebrations. Summer is in full bloom. Families gather for cookouts and vacations, and fireworks illuminate the evening sky. This year, our nation commemorates its 250th Independence Day, while Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., prepares to convene its 85th Grand Conclave in Cincinnati, Ohio. Though these occasions commemorate different milestones, both invite us to reflect on the meaning of freedom, responsibility, and purpose.
July carries an even deeper meaning for me because it is now, and has been for the last 31 years, the month that I celebrate my wedding anniversary. Yet growing up, the Fourth of July was unquestionably my favorite day of the summer. I eagerly saved my birthday money to buy firecrackers, sparklers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, and every other firework my savings could afford. Like many children, especially young boys, I was fascinated by the excitement, thrill, and spectacle fireworks offered. I even conducted a few youthful “science experiments” by searching for ant hills and then blowing them up. Looking back, those childhood celebrations remind me how easy it is to enjoy the excitement of freedom without fully appreciating the sacrifices that made it possible.
Two hundred and fifty years ago, our nation declared its independence, affirming the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Yet for many Americans, especially African Americans, those promises remained unrealized for generations. Our history has required, and in some ways continues to require, countless men and women to fight against slavery, segregation, lynching, Jim Crow discrimination, voter suppression, and racial injustice in pursuit of the very freedoms our nation proclaimed.
Whether spiritual, personal, or societal, freedom has never been merely granted. It has always required courage, perseverance, sacrifice, and faith.
The Apostle Paul understood this truth when he encouraged Timothy:
“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called.”
1 Timothy 6:12 (NIV)
Every time I put on my boxing gloves, this verse comes to mind. A good fight is not fueled by anger or hatred; it is guided by conviction, integrity, and faith. Paul reminds us that our greatest battles are not simply political or cultural; they are spiritual. As followers of Christ, we are called to stand firmly for truth, justice, compassion, and righteousness while reflecting God’s love toward others.
As members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., this calling resonates deeply with our own history. Our founders established Omega Psi Phi during a time when opportunities for African Americans were severely limited, creating a Brotherhood rooted in friendship and committed to leadership, scholarship, perseverance, and service. Like the founders of our fellow Divine Nine organizations, our founders believed that education, unity, and purposeful action could help expand opportunities for future generations. Together, the visionary founders of the Divine Nine sought to build more than enduring legacies of scholarship, leadership, and service; they sought to help fulfill America’s unfinished promise of liberty, equality, and justice.
As many of our brothers prepare to travel to Cincinnati for the 85th Grand Conclave, may we remember that our gathering is about far more than fellowship and celebration. It is an opportunity to honor the vision of our founders, strengthen our Brotherhood, conduct the business of Omega with wisdom and integrity, and recommit ourselves to serving our communities with renewed purpose.
The same principle applies beyond Omega. Whether we serve in our churches, workplaces, neighborhoods, schools, or homes, freedom always carries responsibility. The liberties we enjoy today should inspire us to become people who leave our communities stronger than we found them.
As fireworks fill the skies this Independence Day, may they remind us that the brightest light is not found in a celebration, but in lives lived with faith, courage, humility, and service.
To my Psi Lambda Lambda brothers, our community partners, friends, and Divine Nine associates, may we continue to fight the good fight, not merely for ourselves, but for our families, our communities, our nation, and for the glory of God.
The brightest light is not found in a celebration, but in lives lived with faith, courage, humility, and service.
Prayer
Gracious and Almighty God,
We thank You for the freedoms we enjoy and for the countless sacrifices made by those who came before us. As we celebrate this season of independence, remind us that true freedom is found in faithfully walking with You.
Strengthen us to fight the good fight with courage, wisdom, humility, and love. Guard our hearts against pride, division, and complacency, and help us to become instruments of peace, justice, and hope wherever You place us.
We pray for our nation as it marks this historic anniversary. Grant wisdom to our leaders, unity to our communities, and healing where there is brokenness.
We also lift up the brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., especially those traveling to the 85th Grand Conclave. Bless our fellowship, guide our deliberations, protect us throughout our travels, and inspire every decision to strengthen our beloved Fraternity and expand its impact in communities around the world.
Finally, Lord, empower each of us to live lives worthy of the freedom You have given us through Christ, serving others with compassion, leading with integrity, and shining Your light wherever we go.
In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen.
May God bless you, your family, and all who are called to serve and uplift others.

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”
Galatians 5:13 (NIV)
Disciplined Freedom: Free to Serve
Welcome to another edition of Psi Lambda Lambda’s Chaplain’s Corner. My prayer is that these reflections continue to encourage, inspire, and challenge all who visit this page as we seek to grow in faith, service, and purpose.
June has always been one of my favorite months. Not only is it my birthday month, but as a child, June signaled the arrival of summer: longer days, warmer weather, and freedom from the routines of school. It was a season filled with possibilities, adventure, and the simple joy of spending time with friends.
As I have grown older, June has taken on even deeper meaning. In addition to celebrating another year of life, I now look forward to Father’s Day and the opportunity to honor the fathers, father figures, mentors, and caregivers who have helped shape our lives. June is also home to Juneteenth, a powerful reminder of the enduring value of freedom and the sacrifices made by those who fought to secure it.
When I reflect on Father’s Day and Juneteenth together, I am struck by a common theme: freedom and discipline.
Many of us can remember a father, grandfather, uncle, coach, teacher, pastor, or mentor who provided a unique balance of both. They gave us room to grow, explore, and discover who we were meant to be, while also providing guidance, accountability, and correction when needed. Their presence helped us understand that true freedom is not the absence of boundaries; it is the ability to make wise choices within them.
That truth is reflected beautifully in Galatians 5:13: “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” As followers of Christ, we have been blessed with the freedom that comes through God’s grace. We are free from fear, free from condemnation, and free to live with purpose. Yet Paul reminds us that Christian freedom is never meant to be self-centered. Freedom is not merely the ability to do what we want; it is the opportunity to do what is right. It is a freedom that calls us to humility, responsibility, and service.
This message is for every area of our lives. Whether in our families, workplaces, communities, or organizations, our freedom should be accompanied by integrity and discipline. For those of us who are members of the Divine Nine, we are privileged to wear the letters and colors of organizations built upon scholarship, service, leadership, and community uplift. For Omega Men, disciplined freedom finds expression through our Cardinal Principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift — principles that challenge us to use our freedom not merely for ourselves, but for the betterment of others. With that privilege comes responsibility. We must strive to ensure that our actions reflect the values we profess and the legacy we have inherited, especially when wearing our colors and letters.
My brothers of Psi Lambda Lambda, June provides us with another opportunity to recommit ourselves to service. Whether through voter engagement efforts, volunteering with our sponsored Omega Trailblazers Harlem Little League team, participating in health awareness initiatives such as the upcoming Prostate Cancer Walk, or simply helping a neighbor or organization in need, we have countless opportunities to put disciplined freedom into action.
As we celebrate Juneteenth and Father’s Day, let us honor both the freedom won by those who came before us and the wisdom imparted by those who guided us along the way. Let us remember that freedom reaches its highest purpose when it is used to uplift others.
May we be people who not only cherish freedom, but who also exercise it with discipline, humility, and love.
Be free.
Be disciplined.
Be of service.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the gift of freedom and for the countless blessings You have bestowed upon us. During this season of Juneteenth and Father’s Day, we remember those who sacrificed so that others might live in greater liberty, and we honor the fathers, mentors, and caregivers who have guided us with wisdom, strength, and love.
Lord, help us to use our freedom as You intended — not for selfish gain, but as an opportunity to serve others humbly and faithfully. Grant us the discipline to make choices that reflect Your character, the courage to stand for what is right, and the compassion to uplift those in need.
Bless our families, our communities, and all organizations committed to making a positive difference in the lives of others. Strengthen us to be faithful stewards of the freedom You have given us and willing instruments of Your grace wherever You may lead us.
May our lives reflect integrity, humility, and service — so that through our actions others may see Your light and experience Your love.
In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen.
May God bless you, your family, and all who are called to serve and uplift others.

"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!"
Psalm 133:1 (KJV)
Stronger Together: The Blessing of Unity and Community
Welcome to the inaugural edition of Psi Lambda Lambda's Chaplain's Corner. My prayer is that these reflections encourage and inspire all who visit this page as we strive to become the people God has created and called us to be.
The month of May provides us with several opportunities for reflection. We celebrate mothers who have nurtured, sacrificed for, prayed for, and loved us. During Memorial Day, we honor those brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. And this year, the men of the Mighty Second District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. gathered for the 78th Second District Conference under the fitting theme: "We're Stronger Together."
Reflecting on that theme, I was drawn to Psalm 133:1. While that scripture speaks of brethren, its message extends to all of God's people. Families flourish through unity. Communities thrive through cooperation. Organizations grow through collaboration. God's design has always been for us to strengthen one another rather than walk alone.
In a world increasingly marked by division, conflict, and isolation, unity has become both rare and precious. We see division in our communities, our workplaces, our politics, and sometimes even within our own homes. Yet God continues to call us to something higher — to work together, pray together, serve together, and support one another as we navigate life's challenges.
Throughout my journey in Omega, I have learned that many of life's challenges are easier to overcome when others stand beside you. Whether it is a family member, a friend, a mentor, a person of faith, or a brother of Omega, encouragement and support often make the difference between giving up and moving forward. The same truth applies beyond fraternity walls. Many of us can point to a praying mother, a supportive spouse, a trusted friend, a mentor, a pastor, or a community leader whose encouragement helped shape who we are today.
We all have a role to play in building stronger families, neighborhoods, and communities. Young people are searching for authentic role models. Families are seeking stability and encouragement. Communities are looking for leaders who lead not only with words but with integrity, compassion, and action.
As we move into the summer months, I encourage each of us to be intentional about strengthening the relationships around us. Check on someone who may need encouragement. For the brothers of Psi Lambda Lambda, this includes supporting our chapter's initiatives and programs. For all of us, it means investing our time, talents, and resources in efforts that strengthen our communities and uplift future generations. Look for opportunities to bring people together rather than drive them apart.
The challenges facing our communities today are significant. We face battles that are spiritual, economic, educational, emotional, and social. Too many young people are growing up without trustworthy examples of leadership. Too many families are struggling in silence. Too many individuals feel disconnected and alone.
Our communities do not need more spectators; they need servants.
They do not need more critics; they need builders.
They do not need more division; they need examples of unity.
They need people willing to stand together and demonstrate what genuine love, service, and leadership look like.
Let us not merely talk about unity — let us practice it. Let us not merely gather together — let us grow together. Let us not merely connect with one another — let us commit ourselves to uplifting one another and the communities we serve.
For when God is at the center of our lives and our relationships are strengthened by love, respect, and shared purpose, we truly become stronger together.
May God bless you, your family, and all who are called to serve and uplift others.
